A layer of wax or plastic is sprayed inside and outside of them to make them water proof. Clay and wax coated cups disappeared with the invention of polyethylene coated cups (a process to cover the surface with very thin layer of polyethylene, waterproofing and wielding the seams together).

Once the cups are given shape, they are made waterproof. After the two processes are done, the glasses are stuck with stickers by different brands to customize them.
